JUMA was founded in April 2018 by Professor Danielle de Andrade Moreira in partnership with researchers Daniela Marques de Carvalho Oliveira and Letícia Maria Rêgo Teixeira Lima.

 

Early published research conducted by the group focused on theory-based studies of justice and climate litigation during the Anthropocene.

 

Since then, JUMA has expanded its team of researchers and shifted to developing specific studies on climate litigation in Brazil. Between 2020 and 2021, with the support of Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), we developed research published in Ebook by Editora PUC-Rio on “Climate Litigation in Brazil: Legal Arguments for the Inclusion of the Climate Variable in Environmental Licensing.” This Ebook sought to demonstrate that there are already sufficient tools to demand the inclusion of the climate variable in environmental licensing in Brazil, and it is possible to use climate litigation to enforce compliance. In 2021, JUMA received new support from the Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), this time to develop the research “Litigating the Climate crisis: Applied Knowledge for Implementing Climate Policies in Brazil,” which aims to develop works that promote applied legal reflection and analysis on law’s potential to face the climate crisis and its challenges to doing so. It also aims to aid in the discovery and creation of legal arguments for climate litigation in Brazil. In the context of this research, the Database on Climate Litigation in Brazil  was built, which brings together Brazilian court cases classified as “climate litigation”.
